Matthew was a failed Jew who found the Messiah. To Matthew, Jesus was the fulfillment of the promises that God made to Israel for a savior who would save them from their oppressor. Yet, Matthew found, like us, that his greatest oppressor was himself, and his own sin; only Jesus can rescue us!
